You're just as likely to smack your head hard in a ride to the shop if you come off as if you're in a skatepark Rick. You might crash more often in a skatey or where-ever you're "riding", but when you're riding to the shops there's cars that you don't have at riding spots. I've stacked it riding to the train station making a mistake jumping a gutter and smacked my helmet on the concrete, Betz was saying he stacked it on a bike path. I wear a helmet even when I'm stuffing around in the back yard, your head isn't magically harder just because you're not riding hard.

Good on you Tom for pestering him.

+1 I have had more serious stacks from riding to school or the shops than I have on the track!

A dog ran into my front wheel on my way back from school, sending me over the bars and a piece of the road 1cm into my helmet. I'll always wear one no matter where I ride.

Not wearing a helmet isn't so much that the person is stupid, its just fashion, if you read a BMX magazine no one has helmets on, if you read an MTB magazine, most the riders are wearing helmets.

You also see it when selling bikes.. the amount of times I've sold a bike to someone and they don't want to buy a helmet because it'll mess up there hair or doesn't suit them is ridiculous.

It's this looks over function mentality that needs to change... unfortunately that mentality goes beyond the bike industry.

i never used to wear a helmet, until my mate had a crash at the bmx track ( front wheel washed out around a berm) and you could see where his helmet gouged a big groove in the hardpack roadbase that the track is made of, and now i wear a helmet all the time and thank god because i would definately have some sort of brain damage/ be dead if it wasnt for my helmet. oh and by the way my mate didnt get any head injuries just a broken arm.

Anyone who does not wear a helmet (particularity in high risk activities) should be branded as a temporary citizen. No Brain, No Pain - they deserve it. The unfortunate thing is these people (if they have a serious accident) hog up critical emergency resources - all because of their own stupidity.

I see from time to time I see the same letter appear in various papers (The West, local Community papers, etc) by a nut case from the Citizen's Rights Association or the likes ranting and raving how the legal requirement for bike helmets should be abolished based on some so-called statistics. Some of which include:

An increase (yes, an increase) in accidents involving bicycles since the introduction of bike helmets.
A decrease in bicycle sales.
And apparently makes cycling more dangerous.

I'll try and find the letter. Maybe the man is on crack...

Either way - he might want to take these statistics into mind as well...

You see so many kids not wearing one because the Police can't do much apart from warn them.
Nothing to say that parents haven't brought them a helmet either.
I remember when I was a kid riding around in Canberra I wore my helmet because we couldn't really afford to get a $50 fine!

Unfortunately most people are invincible until it happens to them. I have kids so I try not to be lazy and not put my helmet on when just pedaling around our place (pea gravel mind you) because it does set a bad example, but I have done it. And yes I think when you read these stories of how simple things turn into potentially bad situation then it makes you think about it more. When I have gone for a quick spin around here without a helmet, it is always in the back of my mind that I could stack it, kind of like falling off and palm planting the one time you forget to put the gloves on!

There is always risks in life and sometimes you can be unlucky no matter the precaution you do or don't take.

I got a new skate helmet the other day to wear on my DJ bike  :)

I never used to wear a helmet back in the days (DJ/Street riding), but now I would not ride without one!
