I’m looking for a light rim, 36h and in white. Tyres will be a mixture of halo twin rails (2.2 wide) and holy rollers (2.4wide). What rim will be the best here? Yes I have searched this forum and rotorburn but most of them talk about MTX/Mavic not a mixture of rims like this.

What rim?
o   Atomlab Pimplite
o   Sun Ringle Rhynolite XL?
o   Sun rims MTX (probably the 29 or 31)
o   NS Trailmaster

I was looking at the Mavic 721/729 but have changed my mind due to them not coming in white.
At the moment im really considering the NS Trailmaster rim as that looks very nice :D.

Also what shop in the metro area will supply these , and lace them up using quality spokes to a DMR cassette hub? I know most will but i want a good job.

Also should i get it retensioned after its first hard ride?

thanks :D

i wouldn't go the NS rims. they have no reputation yet so you don't know what your buying.

I'd go MTX if you want white.

XL if you want light but strong

never ridden Atom labs...

And yes it is a good idea to have it re-tensioned after a few hard rides.

surprised Paul hasn't plugged Malaga's to get your wheel built yet lol.

Where abouts do you live?

i live in armadale.
I was going to get my rim built at the local bike shop, but my mate (Lee) just left and he was my good wheel builder/straightener. At the moment he has no access to wheel truing stand....

Cheers again tony! Apparently also the NS rims arent made for cross lacing? and they also have no sleeves for the nipples so apparently weaker?

I have previously ridden MTX33 and they where unkillable. Is there any strength difference between the MTX29/31?

I haven't come across a shitty product from NS yet. The way they build their bikes they aren't going to put out a crap rim at this stage of the game, maybe early on they might have. I run Mavic 721s on my Suburban, light and tough, I haven't had to touch them since the first build.

They should make derailleur hangers in the shape of a bottle opener, everyone would carry a spare.

I would have said MTX two years ago but the new MTX 33's etc are pretty soft, they dent like crazy and apparently crack, as seen above.

If you want strong I'd go for a Mavic EX729 but they are on the heavy side. For something lighter go the Mavic EX721, they seem to be the DH standard rim now and are of typical high Mavic quality.

Of course if you're mad keen on white you could get the Funn Descender rims. They are actually the older Sun MTX rims, which I have on my bikes, and they have a reputation for being indestructible. They only come in 32 hole thou, but you are getting a bloody strong rim, in white at a good price.

Also build the wheels with DT Swiss Alpine 3 spokes and brass nipples. The Alpine 3's are stupidly strong and still lighter than a standard plain gauge spoke and are worth the extra cost.

Not from me, but skendo on here will probably attest to the atomlab rims being very good, although personally i dont think they represent excellent value.
He is also experienced with sun equalisers, which come in varying widths and white, and they seem pretty good too.

Yeah but Mike your wheel was built by Chain reaction. My EQ31 hasn't died and its had some massive cases. Duno if Mike and Rexy remember me sending the 2nd at cockburn to massive case when i had the pikes of the Nici.

Built up good they last forever.

I personally think NS trailmasters, as they look well hot, and I want to know how they go. In reality a company like NS shouldn't really come out with a bad product, they have a team of riders who test everything first. You can't get NS through your LBS though, has to be online...

Mavics are also good though.

Don't really like how you need to have Atomlab nipples for their rims, that is a little lame.

I've always had a crush on Rynolite XL's.

The main thing really is to get a good wheelbuilder to build it for you. Have a tensioned after a few solid rides. Then ensure you get it tightened when it needs it in future!

Ahh so I'm not alone!

My pick out of your list would be the Rhynolite XL, but I didn't know they came in white.
I would go for one of the others if I wanted to try out something different. Besides if nobody brought anything that was new and unproven well nobody would every try out any new products would they.

sorry pebble they probably dont :D

but i have access to powdercoating or 2pac acrylic spray on paint in whatever colour. Really this is a rim choice not colour i guess.

The Trailmasters (having no eyelets) means you cannot use alloy nipples? Also what locktite is used on spokes/nipples? I have .243 at the moment?.

cheers again...

I didn't use loctite when I built the wheels on my suburban. I used grease on the threads so that they wouldn't seize when tensioned or when adjusted later on. That was the way I was taught by a seasoned wheelbuilder and it's worked fine so far.
